Small motorcycle rallies are fun!

Ahhh, the 2009 ACE Tourer rally is getting closer! We had really hoped to attend the Honda Shadow ACE Tourer rally last year so that we could meet some of the fine folks that make up the Tourer forum, but circumstances prevented us from attending.

Fast forward another whole year, and John now has a Tourer, too, purchased from one of my forum mates! We decided that heading to the T rally was a “must” trip this year, and we’ve already made our reservations in Elkins, WV. It will be so wonderful to meet our fellow T riders in person, after talking with them online for almost 2 years.

We’ve attended the last two Honda Shadow dot net forum rallies, and there are just enough folks to make it interesting and fun, and not so many that it’s overwhelming. We had approximately 30 bikes at the Virginia Beach rally in 2007, and it was amazing to ride the Chesapeake  Bay Bridge Tunnel together.

I will never forget coming up out of the tunnel to see the lightning and dark clouds – riding back to Newport News in that downpour was a harrowing experience, but we all made it safely. Last year, the HSN rally was in Asheville, NC – beautiful countryside and great riding! John and I snuck off to see Biltmore while the rest went on a long ride, and that was a great experience, too. We met up with everyone later for dinners and chats – what a great group.

If you belong to a motorcycle forum, and you’ve never been to one of these gatherings of forum members, you are really missing out on something special. Meeting forum members in person is a wonderful experience – you get so much more out of a “face-to-face” than you do from reading typed words…PLUS, you get to RIDE!! And eat, and laugh, and swap stories, and hassle each other, and SHARE the experience in person.

To get to our Tourer rally, it’s going to be just over 250 miles for us to wiggle up over the mountains to Elkins, so I’m really trying hard to get this bum shoulder back in shape for the ride. I just recently felt like I gained enough strength in the shoulder that I could hop back on the Jasmine Wind and ride. Thank God for physical therapists!!

I’m already planning what clothes and bike items to bring, I’m airbrushing t-shirts (for the drawing and for sale), and printing maps for our ride. I always get nervous before a big ride, but because we don’t have any big cities to ride through this time, I’m just itching to get rolling and enjoy the view…and give some hugs to my forum friends!

Till next time,
RIDE SAFE,

Comparison Riding 3 Bikes and…

image John got the Benley in tip-top running order for me, and since it was a sunny day, I figured I’d take her around the neighborhood for a little putt. Man, did that put a smile on my face! This bugger can boogie! Just a slight brain adjustment to use the mid controls, and I was flying down the road. This bike is so easy to maneuver, and has great power for her size. What a hoot to ride.

I was feelin’ sassy after getting my knees in the breeze, took a look at the Sportster sitting in the driveway, and promptly told John, “I’m taking the Sporty for a spin.”  He was pretty darn shocked, cuz I’ve only ridden the Sportster once before.  About 4 years ago, right after I had concluded my 10-year bike-riding hiatus, I had taken the Sporty around a parking lot for a very short stroll. It seemed really huge and heavy to me back then, as my regular ride was a VLX600.

Yesterday, I stretched my legs waaaaay up to those forward controls (dang, they are a mile away), and I rode the beast out of the driveway – hmmm – I guess I CAN handle this bike. The CG is so different than the T, and I have to adjust my riding style. The front end feels “empty” compared to the T, if you know what I mean – there’s more substance in the T’s front end – I hope I’m describing that adequately. The HD has that mega-vibe that would kill me on a long trip, and also, I noticed a huge difference in how it wants to make turns. The HD to me seemed almost like it wants to “flop” into a turn, where the T is a mind-reader, smoothly heading into the turn you’re thinking about. The Sporty will also take off like a shot with barely any throttle movement, and I feel like I need to reign her in a bit, lest I get myself in trouble. Anyhow, it was interesting to hop back on the HD and see how it felt this time around compared to my last experience and compared to the T. After a few fun circles around the neighborhood, I pulled back into our driveway.

Since I was already seat-hopping, I figured I’d check out John’s T, too. Ahhhhh, as soon as I threw a leg over his T, I was HOME (same thing I’ve always said about my T). The T is comfort, ease, smoothness, stability. Really, the only imagedifference between our two T’s is that John’s T is much quieter than mine – I’ve got some modification done to my pipes for a wee bit o’ growl. I really wanted to head out on the road, but kept telling myself I better not overdo it and stress out my shoulder…so I headed back into the driveway.

Well, as long as I was taking test rides…John told me to hop on the replacement to the roasted Ol’ Ironsides. It’s a little bulky, not very good at highway speeds, but it’s fun! I’m surprised that John was even off of the darn thing long enough to let me take it for a stroll!
After so many months of no riding, I feel like my shoulder is finally getting strong enough to take short rides, and it sure felt GOOOOOOOD! I just had to share my joy!

Mural project in WI

Hi folks! I’ve been working in Madison, Wisconsin, on four GIGANTIC murals at a daycare/nature center. Twenty days to paint all four murals: a Serengeti Room, a Rain Forest, a Great Plains Room, and a Jungle lobby. WOW! I am tired, brain-dead, and my body hurts, but the murals are looking awesome. I’ve got 8 days left…

Today, Teri Barr from Channel 3/14 in Madison, came to do a story on the facility, and they took footage of my hands at work. The story will air on Thursday at 9 PM Central on Channel 3, and on Friday night on Channel 14. The video of the story will also be available on the website for those stations after the story airs. Channel3000.com

The facility is absolutey AMAZING! There will be lots of animals, interactive things for the kids (a treehouse in the Rain Forest, a mountain cave in the Serengeti, a teepee in the Great Plains…and more).

Wish me luck, as this is quite a huge project, and it’s tough being away from home while doing such an intense schedule. I miss my hubby, my dog, my friends, my motorcycle, and my own bed. This project took a huge amount of planning: multiple sketches, lists of colors and how many gallons of each, purchasing extra brushes (walls KILL artist brushes), lists of art supplies needed (like snap lines, chalk, transparencies, rags, buckets, spray bottles, etc), and shipping my art supplies to my destination (airlines ALWAYS lose my luggage).

Here’s a preview of a little bit of the work we’ve been doing…

Till next time…make art a part of your life!!
Peaceful Journeys,
Dawn
